Lieutenant Governor Visits Nome to Talk Relief from Diminished Cruise Season

Nome recently had its first visitors from the state capitol since the pandemic began. Lieutenant Governor Kevin Meyer and former representative Bill Thomas arrived on April 30th to learn how local business owners have been impacted by the decimated cruise season.

Police arrested twenty-year old Javen Slwooko of Gambell in the Hansons grocery store on an active arrest warrant. He was mandated to return to the Seaside Center after completing his shift at Hanson’s on Friday, April 23rd but did not– prompting authorities at Seaside to notify the Nome Police for Slwooko’s arrest.

Stebbins Gets $7.5 Million to Start Water and Sewer System

The Norton Sound city of Stebbins currently lacks running water or sewer to residential homes — but $7.5 million will help build a sustainable water and wastewater system for the community.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the funding in a news release Wednesday. To respond to the need for substance abuse treatment in the Norton Sound, Norton Sound Health Corporation is planning on starting a substance abuse treatment center in Nome. The Wellness and Sobering Center will be based in the old hospital, and may open as early as fall 2014.

Nome’s Public Safety Commission Approves New Use of Force Policy

Nome’s Public Safety Advisory Commission convened this month to discuss the drafted use of force policy. After several cancelled meetings due to COVID-19, and failing to make quorum, the commission did meet on Monday for the first time since October of 2020.
