Darleen Fernandez recently joined the KNOM Radio Mission family following more than twenty years as an arts administrator/fundraiser with local organizations including Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Sitka Music Festival and Anchorage Concert Chorus. Most recently she served as Operations Manager for Anchorage Economic Development Corporation. Prior to arts administration, Darleen worked for local credit unions where positions included general ledger bookkeeper, accounting supervisor and controller. During that time Darleen studied and learned principles of accounting, fiscal management and office operations.
A proud University of Alaska Anchorage alum, Darleen holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Public Communications with emphasis in advertising and public relations and a business minor. An avid home cook, Darleen also studied culinary arts at UAA and is one semester from earning a bachelor’s in Hotel and Restaurant Management. She also serves as Vice President on the Alaska Chamber Singers Board of Directors.
It was the combination of journalism, prior accounting work experience and Catholic roots that drew Darleen to the Business Manager position at KNOM. Having worked as Parish Bookkeeper at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, she knows first hand how meaningful and rewarding it is to work for an organization dedicated to the service of God’s people.
She and her husband Bardon Simons love spending time with their nine grandchildren, enjoying live music, trying new foods and traveling — especially to warm weather destinations and her hometown, San Francisco. When not at work, Darleen can be found in her kitchen, on the Alaska Airlines website scouting future vacation options or walking Westchester Lagoon with her dog, Chico.
