Scot Henderson takes council seat

The Nome Common Council met on Oct. 11 to swear in new council member Scot Henderson. Henderson replaces former council member Jennifer Reader, who chose not to run for reelection this year.

The council passed a resolution thanking Reader for her service to the community.

Also at the meeting, Mayor John Handeland appointed Alaska Legal Services attorney Peter Travers to the Public Safety Commission.

“I think that brings us down to only one vacancy, finally. And we’ll see if we can’t get that addressed here in the next meeting, or two at the most,” Handeland said.

The number of vacancies has forced the Public Safety Commission to cancel many of its meetings over the past several months.

In the city manager’s report, Glenn Steckman touched on port issues, saying he anticipates that repairs to the Inner Harbor Launch Ramp will be finished by Oct. 26.

The Nome Common Council will meet next on Oct. 25.
