Nome-Beltz E-Sports Team Competes in Final Match, Varsity Undefeated in Fall Season
The Nome-Beltz E-sports team competed in their season’s final match last month. Despite having their state championship cancelled by the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA), the Nanooks, composed of both varsity and junior varsity squads, may have been one of the few sports teams still allowed to compete in the state of Alaska.

Wrestling’s season, however, is still to be determined. ASAA’s Executive Director, Billy Strickland, is confident those dates will be decided by the next board meeting.

According to ASAA, this decision applies to football, swimming and diving, gymnastics, rifle, music, E-Sports, Drama/Debate/Forensics, and volleyball. This news comes just a few days after the organization hosted the high school Cross-Country State Championships.

The 2020 Alaska State Cross Country Championship results are in: Nome-Beltz runner Tobin Hobbs and Unalakleet runner Kanayaq Ivanoff both finished in the top 10 in their respective divisions.

The Bering Strait School District will be sending two male and two female high school runners to the state competition in Anchorage this coming Saturday, October 10th.

The Nome-Beltz High School volleyball team resumed practice nearly two weeks ago after an athlete tested positive for the disease caused by the coronavirus. As it stands, the Nanooks may be the only team in the region currently holding practices.

Nome-Beltz Jr/Sr High School won’t begin classes until later this month [August 25th or 26th], but students are already back on campus for other activities and sports – like cross country.
