Subsistence Schedules Spark Summer School Survey

A committee comprised of students, staff, parents, and the schools’ administration members, as well as tribal and local representatives, have spent months drafting a new academic calendar for the Nome School District.

To find the best solution, the committee surveyed teachers, staff, and students to find what they prefer. The response blew organizers away.

“About 170 students submitted a survey, which is kind of crazy, because I can’t get at least five kids to talk to me sometime in the morning,” said student representative Lupe Callahan.

Three different options have been proposed, to take into account peak times for hunting, fishing, and resource-gathering, sports schedules, and other factors. One alternative would start after Labor Day and go until mid-June, enabling students to participate in hunting season but limiting opportunities for academic summer programs or work summer jobs.
