Buildings must be fixed or come down, Nome Common Council says

The Nome Common Council on Sept. 13 voted to declare three properties in the city public nuisances.

According to city ordinance, the declaration means that the buildings have some deficiency in their structure or maintenance that might endanger the health or safety of human lives. The owners have until Oct. 1 to remedy the issues with the buildings, remove or demolish them.

The three properties are located at 413 Division St., 602 Warren Place/603 W. Fourth Ave. and 403 E. Tobuk Alley. None of the property owners attended the council meeting to offer commentary.

In other business, the council passed an extension of the current local emergency declaration on to second reading, meaning that the council will hold a final vote at its next meeting. The council originally declared the local emergency on March 17, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. If the council passes the extension at their next meeting, it will be the fifth extension since then. The ordinance would extend the local emergency to Jan. 31, 2022.

The Nome Common Council will meet next on Sept. 27.
