A trailer caught fire on East Third Avenue in Nome the night of Tuesday, June 8th. The blaze left quite a bit of damage, but no injuries were reported.
According to Fire Chief Jim West, the fire was reported to the Nome Volunteer Fire Department around 7:45pm. He says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“[The fire is] not suspicious in nature. We think it might’ve been an electrical cause, but it was in the area where there was a monitor heater. But it’s undetermined at this time.”– Jim West
One occupant was in the building, which is on the corner of Third and Mettler. However, he was unharmed by the burning fire.
“He was in the front room, kind of napping and he woke up to the smoke detector going off and looked down the hallway and saw smoke coming from the back room. Then he got out of the house.”– Jim West
Local volunteer firefighters spent about two hours extinguishing the blaze. West guessed that the damage to the trailer would cost around $40,000.
With summer weather quickly approaching, NVFD Chief West encourages people to make sure their smoke detectors are working properly.
