Iditarod Requests More Sponsorship Money from City of Nome; Council Discusses Elections

Looking down a snow-covered street in a rural Alaska town with a large "Iditarod" banner hanging overhead and a carved wooden archway standing in the center of the street.

The Nome City Council plans to hold the final vote tonight on whether they will change their elections process. During their regular meeting, the council will move from a seated system to an at-large system — one where all of the candidates run together and the two with the most votes are elected to the council or school board.

The council also received a letter from the Iditarod Trail Committee asking the city of Nome for $100,000. The Iditarod says that money will be used to “offset the projected hard costs of staging the 2022 finish in Nome”. This is a steep increase from the typical sponsorship of $10,000 that Nome has given the Iditarod in the past.

City leaders will also vote on an ordinance that would update the remote sellers tax code. The Nome Common Council meets at 7pm tonight at City Hall in Nome.
