Nome Council Allocates Funds for Youth Groups, Passes Budget Amendments in Tonight’s Meeting

Youth programs in Nome will have a bit more money to carry them through COVID-19 after the Nome Common Council officially allocates extra funding during their regular meeting tonight.

Nome council will distribute a $100,000 community benefits share from the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC). The council met in a work session last week to talk with some of the interested youth programs and designate appropriate funds.

The city will also be keeping $100,000 from NSEDC to do upgrades to the heating and ventilation system at Nome City Hall. That work is reflected in their budget amendments that will also be voted on tonight. Expenses in the general fund are expected to decrease by around three-quarters of a million dollars. According to the city’s interim Finance Director Nickie Crowe, that’s due in part to staffing vacancies along with city salaries that have been paid for by CARES Act and FEMA funding.

The meeting will be held at 7pm at City Hall in Nome.
