In the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, a man from Emmonak was allegedly beaten in his home to the point of unconsciousness. After receiving a report at 3:25am, Alaska State Troopers responded and found 39-year-old Brian Agwiak deceased in his residence.

Investigators from Alaska Bureau of Investigation and forensic scientists from the State of Alaska crime lab arrived at Agwiak’s residence to assist with the investigation. AST did not say when exactly the forensic team arrived on the scene. Their investigation revealed that Agwiak was assaulted in his home until he was unconscious, then assaulted further. According to the investigators, Agwiak died a short time after being attacked.

Troopers say 27-year-old Rudolf Waska assaulted Agwiak, and arrested him in response to this incident. He was arraigned on charges of Murder in the 2nd Degree and Assault in the 1st Degree. Waska is currently being held on a $100,000 cash performance bail.

Autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner are still pending in this case. KNOM will provide more information regarding this incident when it becomes available.
