“YOURS FOR WESTERN ALASKA”

(907) 443-5221

New Faces, New Duties

Despite a later start to the year and quarantine restrictions, the 2020-21 volunteer cohort is off and running.

They are joined by a new General Manager, Tony Calumet. He comes to Western Alaska from Iowa, where he was the Executive Director of Iowa Catholic Radio. You can read more about Tony in his bio, found here.

This year’s volunteers are already making KNOM history by taking their own weather measurements. The station is now conducting temperature and precipitation measurements for the National Weather Service (NWS), as a NWS co-op member. Although Nome has several other measurement points, when the NWS office in Nome closes next year KNOM will be one of few places for daily readings and – critically – the only place for snow accumulation records.

Longtime Nome weather forecaster Christopher Clarke briefly returned to help KNOM set up the equipment. Together he and Operations Manager Davis Hovey lamented the “drudgery of digging in permafrost”.
