Council To Discuss Nome’s Emergency Order, Possible Bonuses for Police Officers

Wade Harrison takes the oath to become a Nome police officer. Nome City Council meeting, Monday, April 10, 2017.

The Nome Common Council will revisit the city’s ongoing emergency order during their regular meeting tonight. The order, which is set to expire on December 30th, allows the city manager to authorize measures for slowing the spread of COVID-19, such as controlling travel into Nome.

Currently, Alaska continues to see record-breaking cases of COVID-19 reported in the state on an almost daily basis. This ordinance is up for its first reading and currently suggests extending the emergency order in Nome through June of 2021.

Meanwhile, the Council also looks for ways to increase police retention through a hiring bonus. They will consider a resolution approving $10,000 for officers who stay with the Nome Police Department for at least two years.

The Nome Common Council will meet at 7pm tonight at Council Chambers in City Hall.
