Restorative Remarks: Mary Miller on Seining

"Humpys" like these were seen in record numbers in 2016 in the Shaktoolik and Unalakleet rivers.

SEINING TOGETHER STRENGTHENS FAMILY TIES, written by Mary Miller, reflects on the important role that subsistence plays within the family. This article, originally published in the November 1995 edition of Kaniqsiq News, has been adapted for airplay by KNOM.

Once again, Norton Sound Health Corporation’s Native Connections Project Director Sherri Anderson has lent her voice to Miller’s words, following her reading of Miller’s 1995 keynote address “Finding the Path to Healing: Overcoming Childhood Trauma” which premiered on KNOM’s airwaves last month.

KNOM’s Restorative Remarks is a feature program that adapts inspirational messages by Western Alaskans, for Western Alaskans, for radio airplay. Would you like to volunteer your voice or have a suggestion for a written work we should adapt? Drop us a line by emailing karen.trop@knom.org or call us at the station at 907-443-5221.

Audio used in this presentation comes from the Allakaket Fiddlers, David Arkenstone, Old Crow Fiddlers, Barbara Gallagher, Lisa Hilton, Bill Murk, Danny Wright, Ira Stein, and the community of users at Freesound.org. Permission to adapt this written work for radio play received from Andrew Miller. Image at top: Pink salmon in a seine net. Photo Credit: Mitch Borden/KNOM
