Norton Sound Resident Tests Positive for COVID-19 Outside of Region Where They Are Also Isolating

Another Norton Sound regional resident has tested positive for COVID-19 but Norton Sound Health Corporation reports that the individual is not currently in the region. NSHC does have reason to believe that the individual was in the region while they were infected with the disease.

That brings the total number of confirmed cases for the Nome-census area to 11.

The test was not conducted by NSHC says spokesperson Reba Lean. The patient took the test and is now isolating outside of the region, but that location is currently unknown.

The patient’s home community is not being disclosed at this time. Public Health Nursing and the State Section of Epidemiology are currently doing case investigation and contact tracing.

State officials do not yet know where the individual contracted the virus and whether the case is travel related or contracted through community spread. The patient was tested on June 30th and NSHC received notice of the positive result on Thursday.

Lean says although the test was taken out of the region, it will be counted as part of the Nome-census area. That means there are 11 confirmed cases of COVID-19 for the area with five active and six recovered.
