AMCC facility

A Nome man being held at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) was pronounced dead last night.

Zenon Habros was taken into custody on May 26th after being charged with kidnapping, multiple accounts of sexual abuse of a minor, and assault in the fourth degree. According to a press release from the Department of Corrections, sixty-one-year-old Habros was found unresponsive last night in his cell at 5:17pm. Correctional officers and medical staff were called to perform life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

He was officially pronounced dead at 5:35pm on Tuesday night. The DOC confirmed that the death was not COVID-19 related but could not confirm any other details, citing the ongoing death investigation.

The department does not suspect any foul play and next of kin has been notified. Alaska State Troopers and the Medical Examiner’s Office conduct death investigations for deaths of incarcerated people.

According to the DOC, Habros is the fifth person to die in the department’s custody this year.
