Nome’s All-Tournament Athletes Not Enough to Dominate at Delta Tourney

Both boys and girls’ Nome Nanook basketball teams played in Delta’s Dean Cummings Sr. Memorial tournament earlier this month against Bethel, Galena, and five other teams. The Lady Nanooks had the better day, leaving Delta Junction with a 2 and 1 record.

Nome’s girls got their wins against North Pole and Redington, winning the latter by a single point, 47-46, before eventually losing to Galena 60-43. The boys’ team did not fare as well. After a strong showing against North Pole, the Nanooks lost to host team and eventual champions Delta 69-49 and then to Hutchison 64-56.

Bethel had a strong showing of their own on the boys side, losing only to Delta in the final 61-51. The Bethel girls team went 1-1 with a win over North Pole.

Nome had three all-tournament athletes in Brooke Anungazuk, Lisa Okbaok, and Dawson Schaeffer. Schaeffer and Anungazuk also went on to win their respective three-point shooting contests.

The Nanook basketball teams next face off against Seward starting today.
