Nome’s Legislative Priorities on City Council Docket

Public Safety, domestic violence, and sexual assault are the top legislative priorities the City of Nome will be discussing tonight during their regular meeting.

The Council will discuss two resolutions; one regarding its priorities for the state and the other for federal. Public safety made the top of both those lists. Other concerns the City would like to see lawmakers advocate for include: the deep draft port in Nome, water and sewer infrastructure improvements, and continued state support for programs like the Power Cost Equalization and School Bond Debt Reimbursement.

Nome’s City Council will also discuss resolutions authorizing the purchase of more pieces of large equipment, as part of their ongoing effort to increase financial transparency.

For example, the City will look to authorize more than $250,000 for a new Loader Mount Snow Blower to better handle Nome’s record-breaking snowfalls. The Nome Police are also looking for updated equipment; and the Council will discuss authorizing funds to upgrade an order of tasers for NPD.

While the Council will not be reviewing any old business, they are expected to read from a lengthy list of communications which includes continued support for a plastic bag ban and letters from three local youths encouraging the City to increase funding for the police department.

The Council meeting begins at its usual 7pm time at Council Chambers in City Hall. There will be a 5pm work session to discuss the public proposals competing for funds from the NSEDC Community Benefit Share.
