Nanook Wrestler Injured in Tournament, Nome Hopes to Rally for Regionals

The Nome wrestling team was joined by Stebbins and Unalakleet at the Grace Grizzly Shakedown Wrestling Tournament in Anchorage last weekend (Dec 6th-8th).

By the end of the tournament, pivotal Nanook wrestler Elden Cross had left nursing an injury.

“He got slightly dinged up in the quarter final match. We pulled him out and he was leading twelve to one, but I think he’ll be okay.”

That’s Nome-Beltz Wrestling Coach Dudley Homelvig. The Nanook boys team, with Cross being pulled, was led by Stephan Anderson’s 4th place finish in the 160 weight-class. Natalie Tobuk was the top girl, coming in third in the 112 weight-class.

With the season coming towards an end, the Nanooks look ahead to a hopeful bid at the state tournament. Coach Homelvig gives his thoughts on the next stop for his wrestlers, regionals in Nome.

“It’s hard to tell this time of year who’s ineligible, who’s sick, who’s injured, who switched to basketball. We just hope that we wrestle the best we have so far this year.”

BSSD wrestlers, also hopeful for a shot at state, were represented by Stebbins’s Celeste Katcheak’s 4th place finish in the girls 112 weight-class and Lexi Ivanoff of Unalakleet finishing 3rd in the girls 189 class.

The Nanooks hope to earn a state berth by qualifying at regionals this weekend, and head back to Anchorage on December 20th for the state tournament.
