Two weeks ago, Bering Strait School District held their Mix Six Volleyball Tournament to determine who would move on to the state competition. Twelve of the fifteen total district schools competed and the top two moved on to state.

With the majority of BSSD teams represented, games started on November 20th, a Wednesday of that week, and went on until Saturday. The championship game saw Golovin beating Shishmaref three sets to two. Golovin won the first two and lost the next two before winning the final set and taking the first spot to move onto state.

“We should do well at state, knowing how well our team has come along with their support of each other and how they’re playing with each other.”

– Frank Amaktoolik

That’s Golovin Lynx coach Frank Amaktoolik. The Lynx finished their season with an 18 – 5 record overall, going 16 – 3 in the BSSD, where they finished half a game behind Unalakleet in second place. Golovin’s volleyball team also received a coach of the year award for Amaktoolik.

The Shishmaref Northern Lights came into the Mix Six tournament with a 10 – 7 overall record, going 10 – 5 in their division, good for fifth place overall. The Northern Lights went on to beat Unalakleet three games to zero in the consolation round to earn the second and final state qualifying spot.

Shishmaref’s coach Shaun Milligan was unavailable for comment before the airing of this story.

In the post-match awards at the Mix Six Volleyball Tournament, Gambell won the team academic award with a 3.83 GPA and Unalakleet won the sportsmanship award.

The Mix Six State volleyball tournament is currently underway in Anchorage. The final match will be tomorrow afternoon at 2pm.
