Nome Wrestlers Competed at ACS Tourney, While BSSD Held 38th Annual

The Nome wrestling team returned from the ACS tournament this past weekend, where they met a variety of teams including Kotzebue, Bethel and defending state champs Mt. Edgecumbe High School.

The Nanook boys team was led by Elden Cross to a 16th place finish out of the 33 total teams. Cross was competing outside of his normal 152lb class.

“Elden Cross took third at 145. First and second are defending state champs from last year.”

That’s Nome wrestling coach Dudley Homelvig. Homelvig says the girls team finished eighth overall.

“Natalie Tobuk took fourth in her weight class at 112, and that was probably the toughest girls bracket there.”

Homelvig went on to say that he thought all of the nine Nome girls who went to ACS wrestled well.

For the Bering Strait School District, Alaina Pete of Brevig Mission won the 160lb class as the only girls winner from BSSD. Lindsey Beans-Polk of Bethel finished third in the 135lb class. The Bethel girls team finished third and Kotzebue’s team was fifth.

On the boys side, Coltrane Chase of Kotzebue High School finished third in the boys 140lb class. As a team, the Kotzebue boys finished eleventh.

Many BSSD wrestlers were competing in their own event over the weekend at the 38th annual district cheerleading and wrestling tournament. KNOM, however, has not yet received the full results.

Next up for the Nanooks is the Lancer-Smith tournament in Wasilla, which Coach Homelvig estimates they will bring twenty-six wrestlers to.

Lastly, travel concerns continue to be alleviated for the Nanooks as Homelvig mentioning that his team is more than halfway to its fundraising goal with $18,000 raised of the $30,000 goal.
