The regional hospital in Nome finally saw its first delivery of the new year last week. Neviyah Eve Newhall was born January 13 at the Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC).

According to a statement from NSHC, Newhall’s mother, Becky Waghiyi of Savoonga, was expected to have her baby at the end of this month. But instead, Waghiyi gave birth to seven-pound, 14-ounce Neviyah ahead of schedule.

Waghiyi says baby Neviyah’s brothers, Caleb Toolie and Avery Waghiyi, are “more excited than anyone to meet their new sister.”

The newborn has yet to receive a traditional St. Lawrence Island Yupik name, but Waghiyi says they will select one back home in Savoonga. Neviyah’s father is Raymond Newhall.  Her grandparents include Dorene Waghiyi, Patrick Newhall, and Nina Newhall.
