Troopers Say Kotzebue Juveniles Used a Snowmachine to Run Down Caribou

Two juveniles have been summoned to the Kotzebue court after allegedly chasing and killing a caribou with a snowmachine last week.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) in Kotzebue received complaints the evening of November 11 that a snowmachine was ramming a caribou on the sea ice. An investigation identified two youths in the incident. AWT says the juveniles not only ran down a caribou with a snowmachine, but also shot and killed a bull caribou during closed season.

The two Kotzebue residents were contacted by wildlife troopers and handed four charges each: taking a bull caribou during closed season, harassing and molesting a bull caribou, shooting caribou from a moving snowmachine, and using a rim-fire rifle to take a big game animal.

The caribou meat was taken by AWT and donated to a local charity.
