Zoning Map, Junk Motor Vehicles, Fines All To Be Finalized By City Council

Papers in Nome City Council chambers

Certain properties on the Nome Zoning Map could be rezoned during tonight’s City Council meeting.

Nome’s Common Council will deliberate on amending the Code of Ordinances to change the land uses of property throughout City Zones, such as on the Nome-Council Highway and blocks from East 5th Avenue to Greg Kruschek Avenue.

Another ordinance in the second reading phase would amend Title 5 and Title 18 of the Code of Ordinances to update the definition of a junk motor vehicle. Under the proposed new definition, a junk motor vehicle would include a discarded passenger motor vehicle or one that meets similar criteria.

The City Council will then decide on a separate but related ordinance, which could set monetary penalties for the storage of junk motor vehicles in zoning districts other than the Industrial zone. If this agenda item passes, then it would be a $50 fine for the first offense with increasing fines for further offenses.

Before adjourning the regular meeting, the Council will discuss a resolution authorizing the City to apply for a U.S. Department of Transportation grant. The USDOT TIGER Grant Program could provide funding for the Snake River Moorage and Vessel Haul-out Facility Project at the Port, if the resolution passes and Nome is selected for the grant.

Tonight’s City Council meeting begins at 7pm in Council Chambers.
