Elder Voices: Patrick Omiak

Little Diomede

Patrick Francis Omiak, Sr., shares his story in this week’s installment of Elder Voices. Patrick grew up on Little Diomede and in Holy Cross, and he went on to work as a health aide, a teacher’s aide, and a member of the National Guard.

He speaks about the importance of revitalizing the Inupiaq language and preserving fishing and hunting practices. “I try to pass on what I learned,” says Patrick. He also describes the benefits, and the challenges, of living on an island.

Join KNOM this Wednesday, March 8th, at 11am and again at 6pm for another show from our archive of Elder Voices: a window to the past, a door to the future.
