Elder Voices: Irene Aukongak

Houses on the Hillside in Golovin

On this week’s episode of Elder Voices from the KNOM Archive, hear Golovin’s Irene Aukongak from her 2011 interview. Irene shares her life story: memories of school at Holy Cross, Crooked Creek, and Mt. Edgecombe; fishing and trapping; and her childhood with her brothers, sisters, and her mother.

And she remembers finding her calling as a nurse, working with children. “That fall, I went down to Mt. Edgecombe for nurse’s training. I used to study real hard, and boy! I loved that part, working with moms and babies, and little kids. I really loved that part, maybe because I used to take care of my little brothers and sisters.”

Hear Irene’s story this Wednesday at 11am and again at 6pm, or find it here online. KNOM’s Elder Voices: A window to the past, a door to the future.
