Elder Voices: Beda Slwooko

A boat resting on the beach on a cloudy summer day in Gambell, Alaska.

Beda Slwooko was born on St. Lawrence Island, in Gambell, Alaska. Beda remembers growing up in her grandparents’ house. She shares stories from her childhood, recalling her grandfather as a trapper, the busyness of life in the summer, and when she learned English and chose to turn to Christianity.

KNOM’s Elder Voices airs every Wednesday at 11am and again at 6pm with an interview from our archive. Elder Voices: a window to the past, a door to the future.
