Beth Ipsen with the BLM Alaska Fire Service says the fire is running through an estimated 1,982 acres of tundra and grass but is expected to stop when it reaches a snowpack nearby. The fire is contained in a valley at the bottom of the Zane Hills near the Selawik River.
Twenty-seven-year-old Travis Loughridge left Shungnak on Saturday around noon and was expected to arrive in Fairbanks by Monday evening. According to Alaska State troopers, it is believed that Loughridge broke through the ice at a water crossing and died from hypothermia.
In Ambler on Friday, Kobuk 440 mushers focused on their dogs’ rest, pacing, and the trail ahead. Near the mid-point of the 440-mile course, it’s still anyone’s race.
“You can tell a lot of people are very proud of their livelihood and where they live,” said Brian Adams.
It was an adventure that she describes as one of the most incredible highlights of her year of service. In April, news volunteer Francesca Fenzi hit the trail for a sled dog race that offers a unique look of what makes rural Alaska so special.
As the cost of simply investigating the roads feasibility continues to swell, basic questions about financing, community approval, and potential conflicts of interest remain unanswered.
