Along the Yukon River, Alaska’s intense summer wildland fires and ongoing gear restrictions for subsistence fishermen are keeping fishing to a minimum.
“It’s a way of teaching to get kids some authentic experiences and…put skills to work out in the community, where they matter,” said one teacher participant in the iTREC! program this year.

Despite a grueling run down the Yukon, Ruby was just a pit stop for most mushers. Iditarod teams pressed on to Galena or even to Huslia, where Aaron Burmeister arrived first.
