Barrow Whalers Win Three Games Against Nome

Basketball game happening inside a high school gymnasium

The Barrow High School basketball team proved tough competition for the Nome Nanooks this weekend: Barrow took home three wins against Nome.

Stormy weather made travel to and from Barrow impossible on Friday, cancelling the first set of home and away games. The Lady Nanooks ended up playing a single game against Barrow on Saturday evening, and the Whalers won 73-to-55. Nome’s Kastyn Lie led her team with 20 points, to which EJ Rochon added 15.

In Barrow on Saturday, during a close game, the Whalers won over NBHS boys by just 5 points. According to Nanooks’ Coach Pat Callahan, Nome’s Stephan Anderson played particularly well, scoring 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The second of the two boys’ games brought an even more impressive win for Barrow. The final score was 77-59, and Coach Callahan says Barrow outshot the Nanooks by 58.9% to 33.3% from the field.

Both the Nanooks and the lady Nanooks (high school and junior high teams) will face off with North Pole this weekend at home.

Also happening this week is the 2019 Bering Sea Conference Basketball Tournament, which kicked off in Unalakleet on Monday. 11 Bering Strait School District teams from across the region are going head-to-head until Friday, including Teller, Koyuk, St. Michael, and Golovin.
