Nome, Kotzebue Each Win Two in Weekend Varsity Basketball

Nome Beltz High School "den of the mighty nanooks"

Both the Nome Nanooks and Kotzebue Huskies walked away with two wins this weekend after Nome-Beltz hosted Kotzebue high school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams.

Friday’s games were both nail-biters, with the boys needing to go into overtime. Kotzebue boys took home the win with a final score of 61 to 57 against Beltz, after outscoring Nome 18-to-10 in the fourth quarter and forcing the overtime period. Kotzebue’s Henry Sherman scored 11 of his 17 points in overtime.

After being down 13, the Lady Nanooks made a comeback in the second half of Friday’s game, outscoring Kotzebue 37-to-19. The Nanooks came out on top over Kotzebue by 5 points.

The trend of close games continued into Saturday. With 4 seconds left in the boys’ game, Gareth Hansen hit two free throws, taking the Nanooks to victory over Kotzebue by just one point.

Kotzebue’s Lady Huskies secured their win over Nome by outscoring the Nanooks 15-8 in the third quarter. The final score was 55 to 52.

Nome-Beltz varsity boys and girls will play at Monroe-Catholic in Fairbanks this Wednesday, before traveling to Delta for the Dean Cumming’s Memorial Basketball Tournament starting this Thursday. To keep up with NBHS sports schedules and results, follow NBHS Student Activities on Facebook.
