Earlier this week, a Savoonga teenager died while inside the local school building. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Around 2:30pm on Tuesday, Savoonga’s Village Police Officer reported that 14-year-old Floyd Akeya collapsed in the school gymnasium during gym class. According to State Troopers, CPR was performed, but Akeya was eventually pronounced deceased about an hour later.

Akeya’s body is being transported to the State Medical Examiner in Anchorage for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing, and State Troopers from Nome have responded.
