Elder Voices: Harriet Penayah

Savoonga

Harriet Penayah was born in 1932. In this episode of Elder Voices, she describes what it was like to grow up in Savoonga. She remembers listening closely to her parents and using rocks that she found on the beach as dolls.

Harriet also says the hunters in Savoonga would start their days at 4 in the morning in order to provide food for the community. “Everyone helped each other,” she recalls.

Hear more from Harriet during Elder Voices on Wednesday, June 28th, at 11am and 6pm. Elder Voices: a window to the past, a door to the future.
