The Nome-Golovin (GULL-uh-vin) Snowmachine Race is a blisteringly fast and frenzied competition in which racers — predominantly residents of Western Alaska — sprint to the Norton Sound coastal community of Golovin and back to Nome. The fastest racers finish the 200-mile route in less than 3 hours. Every year, it’s a race that captures the interest of KNOM’s local listeners.

KNOM staffers make an all-hands-on-deck effort to bring Nome-Golovin to the region. Volunteers are on the front lines of high-speed, live reporting; they brought the sounds and live developments of the race to listeners directly from the start/finish line on the ice of the Bering Sea. Especially with a race that’s run at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more, live radio offers an excitement and an efficient, simple stream of communication that rallies the region.
