Photo of the Week: “Hooligans”

Congratulations to Sean Knudsen, this week’s Morning Show photo contest winner!

Hooligan fishing is a unique subsistence activity in our region and we thought that this image truly captured the moment.

We will continue to accept photos through July 31st, 2014, announcing a new winner every week.

If you submitted a photo this week, thank you for your contribution.

You can submit again for next week’s pick. Entries must be in by Thursday, June 26th 2014. Good luck!

What kind of fish? Please educate someone from the lower ’49!

They are hooligans also called cigar fish or candlefish or Eulachon.

Are they good tasting? How big do they get?

Yes they are very good. They don’t get too big… about the size you see in this photo. We gut them, take off their heads and fins, dredge them in cornmeal and fry them. My kids know them as real fish sticks. I also wrap them in Lettuce, mint, clilantro, and dip them in Nuoc Cham (Vietnamese dipping sauce). Other locals dry them, smoke them, and can them.

That sounds delicious. Fresh fish down here is so expensive to buy in
the fish store & we’re not able to go fishing so we miss out on it.
Thank you for your comment. You sound like a good cook!
