With the addition of a new recycling facility out at the landfill, Nome and the Bering Straits region continue developing a waste management strategy unique to rural conditions.

The approach is split between an urban recycling model that removes potentially hazardous waste from communities, and the indigenous practice of salvaging as much as possible for re-use. In this Profile, Zach takes a look at how the city of Nome and other rural organizations are meeting the challenges of recycling in Bush Alaska.
