Our volunteer program

An opportunity of a lifetime,
at the top of the world.

Katie in Wales
Volunteer Katie Ringenbach in the village of Wales, Alaska: the westernmost settlement in North America, less than 30 miles from eastern Russia. Katie flew to the village to report on a unique local sport: Eskimo baseball.

Discover an amazing part of our world. Be a radio DJ. Report on breaking news – live. Immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of the Alaskan Arctic. And get $5,000 for school.

You can do it: as a KNOM volunteer.

Throughout Western Alaska, KNOM is a source of information, inspiration, and companionship; since 1971, KNOM’s full-time volunteers have made that possible. Today's KNOM volunteers are on the front lines of the station’s daily operations.

All volunteers gain invaluable experience in live, on-air radio: whether through announcing music, reporting on breaking news, hosting current-affairs talk shows, or covering the Iditarod Sled-Dog Race. From Nome, volunteers often fly to remote villages to cover traditional festivals and events.

In exchange for one full year of service, each volunteer receives room and board, round-trip air transportation, health insurance, a monthly cash stipend, and, at the end of the service year, an educational fellowship (more below). All volunteers live together in a comfortable home near the studios.

Ben in the newsroom
Volunteer alumnus Ben Matheson broadcasts daily news to Western Alaska from KNOM's newsroom.

And if you’re planning on going back to school – or if you have student loans to pay off – we can help. KNOM offers an outstanding Fellowship Program for each of its volunteers. Successful candidates who finish one year of service receive $5,000 to cover past or future education expenses. Volunteers with existing student loans typically have no problem getting their loans deferred for the duration of their service year.

Prior broadcasting experience is not necessary to volunteer at KNOM. Successful applicants are hard working, self-motivated individuals who can think on their feet and whose actions demonstrate care and concern for others.

Make it your mission. Volunteer for KNOM Radio.
