Volunteers at KNOM keep busy. From top: news volunteer Jesse Zink hosts a Sounding Board talk show; Danielle Sylvester hosts The Morning Show; News Director Laureli Kinneen (left) with volunteer Leah Radde, covering the finish of the 2010 Iditarod Sled-Dog Race; a few volunteers go cross-country skiing on a mountain outside Nome.

Four simple steps:

  1. Verify that you meet the requirements for all volunteer applicants.
  2. Download our application: in Microsoft Word (.doc) format or PDF format.
  3. Fill out the application; make sure you include all information that’s requested. Shoot any questions to Outreach Director Laura Collins: belong@knom.org.
  4. Submit your completed app, either by regular mail or email: see our information on application deadlines and instructions for mail submissions and email submissions, below.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled, with priority given to those received by February 15th.

If you're interested in applying later in the year, send an email to Outreach Director Laura Collins at belong@knom.org. Some positions may still be open!

Submitting applications by email

Attach the various parts of your application – with Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF files – to an email sent to Outreach Director Laura Collins at belong@knom.org. (If you’re applying by email, we recommend downloading our application in the Word-document format, since the PDF format is not editable.)

Please note that Part 9 of the application – your university transcript(s) – cannot be submitted electronically. Please arrange to have your transcript(s) mailed directly from your university registrar to KNOM at the following address:

See application guidelines, below, for more on sending transcripts.

For Part 16 of the application – your audio samplean .mp3 file or a .wav file would be fine; just attach it to the email message with the rest of your application.

Submitting applications by mail

Place all of the items for your application in a single envelope. You can record your audio sample (for Part 16 of the application) on a CD; please include this in your application envelope.

Mail it to:

KNOM Volunteer Applications
PO Box 988
Nome, Alaska 99762

For Part 9 of the application – your university transcript(s) – you may either include a sealed registrar transcript within your application envelope or arrange to have your transcript mailed directly to KNOM. (Some universities prefer to mail their transcripts directly to the institutions that will be reading them.)

If you arrange to have your transcript mailed separately from the rest of the application, just ensure that it is sent to the address above. See application guidelines, below, for more on sending transcripts.

Application guidelines

  • All KNOM volunteers must enter their term of service with a Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university. KNOM is unable to consider applications from “gap year” candidates or from any other applicant who will not have completed a Bachelor’s Degree by the beginning of her or his service year.
  • When you’re obtaining transcripts for your post-secondary education (Part 9 of the application), make sure that they’re official transcripts, issued and sealed by the registrar of your college or university. Most universities can issue transcripts that are sealed in an official envelope with the stamp, seal, and/or signature of the registrar. Please submit this type of transcript (sealed by the registrar in an official university envelope); please don’t submit photocopies or computer print-outs of your grades.
  • All applicants must be citizens of the United States. We are currently unable to consider applications from outside the U.S.
  • Unfortunately, because of the limitations of our volunteer housing, we are unable to consider applications from married couples. Accommodations in our volunteer dormitory consist of twin-sized beds in individual rooms; we regret that we do not have the appropriate facilities to accommodate married couples or families.
