Executive Proclamation
Tony Knowles, Governor

KNOM Radio pioneered local and regional news coverage in western Alaska, bringing critical information to villagers and the people of Nome.  Father Jim Poole and volunteers signed KNOM Radio on the air July 14, 1971, as only the second Alaska radio station west of Anchorage.

KNOM is on the air to inspire, to educate, to inform, and to be a positive companion and a friend to the people of western Alaska, to keep them in touch with issues that are important to their lives, and to help them discuss those issues.

In the past 30 years, KNOM has broadcast over 200,000 hours of news, information, inspiration and public service programming.

To accomplish KNOM Radio's mission, hundreds of people have contributed more than 600,000 volunteer hours to keep the radio station on the air.  KNOM Radio is funded almost entirely by outside money and has contributed over $15,000,000 to the Nome economy.

KNOM Radio has won more national awards than any other station inAlaska.  The radio station has been honored eight times with the national Gabriel Award as "Station of the Year," and has also garnered awards from the Alaska Broadcasters Association; the Alaska Press Club; and the National Association of Broadcasters for its efforts in the area of news, public affairs programming, and entertainment.

KNOM Radio has had 30 years of outstanding broadcasting and service to the people of western Alaska.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tony Knowles, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim July 14, 2001 as:

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans and KNOM fans and supporters to celebrate the 30th anniversary with joy and anticipation of another 30 years of broadcasting excellence.

DATED:  June 29, 2001

Tony Knowles, Governor
who has also authorized the seal
of the State of Alaska to be affixed
to this proclamation.
