Ray Mala
Alaska Native film star Ray Mala, whose films - including Eskimo, seen above - will be screened at this Saturday's film festival in Nome. Mala is the subject of a new biography, Eskimo Star, by Lael Morgan.
This Saturday, the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum will showcase the films of Candle-born and Nome-raised Ray Mala, who rose to fame in the 1920s and 1930s working both in front of, and behind, Hollywood cameras. The films are being shown to promote a new book about Mala’s life, Eskimo Star, by author Lael Morgan. Copies of Morgan’s book will be available at the festival, and Mala’s grandson, Ted Mala, Jr., will be in attendance and signing books. The doors open at Old St. Joe’s this Saturday at 6:00pm, and admission is free.
