Picking up the KNOM Tower

In September, 1970, the 230-foot KNOM tower arrived on the barge, most of it in 20-foot, 700 pound sections.  Eight years later, Tom Busch wrote:

We (Tom and fellow volunteer John Pfeifer) rented an old flatbed truck from Greens, Inc., now Bonanza (editor:  later, Anvil City Station, later Tesoro, on the NW corner of Bering and Seppala Drives).

Before our taking possession, one of their mechanics filled her up with hydraulic fluid, and advised that the brakes were only good for one or two pumpings.

The bed was only 11 feet long, the tower sections 20.

The barge company used a crane to load our truck with the sections, which were quite unstable.

I drove down Front Street and to the station at 3 M.P.H., while John sat on the sections by the rear of the cab to hold them down.

Only two brakings were actually necessary for the two loads.

Everyone available then helped unload the tower, which was temporarily stored in a pile along the East wall of the KNOM building.

(Above)  John Pfeifer rests on the KNOM tower sections moments after they were unloaded and stacked.
