Todd Hindman

Community DJ

Todd Hindman traces his roots to the Lone Star State. He was born and raised in Fort Worth; received his bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University, a branch of Texas A&M; and discovered a passion for music outside the mainstream while working in music stores in Texas – even while teaching full time.

A 1992 vacation to Alaska sparked an interest in moving up North; Todd got a job in Sand Point, Alaska in 1997 and then another in Nome – at the Anvil City Science Academy – in 1999.

As is the case for many Nome residents, Todd’s time in Nome has been far longer than he had ever anticipated; he’s happy to report that his “two-year stay” has now exceeded a decade. So, what’s kept him here? Nome’s residents, Todd says, “make the town”: they’re “a diverse group of people who are willing to help out when there is a need.”

Todd’s tenure in Alaska has also afforded him some incredible opportunities, such as sailing on two icebreakers to Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. He’s also kept busy with academia; he works as a full-time teacher in the Nome School District and just received a master’s degree in educational administration from National University.

Todd’s love for music outside the mainstream – first formed in Texas and furthered in Alaska – is on full display on his two weekly shows on KNOM: Under the Radar (Tuesday, 7-9pm) and Reverberation (Saturday, 10pm-12mid). As Todd describes, his hope with his radio shows is “to give others the opportunity to hear music that they may not otherwise hear.”

When he’s not on the air – or teaching – Todd enjoys photography, art, biking, swimming, hiking, and especially cooking: as the residents of Nome will attest, Todd makes a mean chicken chickpea soup.
