Find out what KNOM volunteers do and how to apply: From its earliest days, KNOM has been fueled by the efforts and energy of its volunteers. Today, they remain on the front lines of the station’s daily operations. Some produce spots, feature interviews, or documentary programs, while others serve as news reporters, writers and producers. All gain invaluable experience in live, on-air radio: whether through announcing music, reporting on breaking news, hosting current-affairs talk shows, or covering the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. From Nome, volunteers often fly to remote villages to cover traditional festivals and events. Throughout Western Alaska, KNOM is a source of information, inspiration, and companionship; since 1971, KNOM’s full-time volunteers have made that possible. Each volunteer receives room and board, round-trip air transportation, health insurance, a monthly cash stipend, and, of course, plenty of practical experience in professional radio broadcasting. All volunteers live together in a comfortable home near the studios.
KNOM also offers an outstanding Fellowship Program for each of its volunteers. Successful candidates who finish one year of service receive $5,000 to cover past or future education expenses.
Prior broadcasting experience is not necessary. Successful applicants are hard working, self-motivated individuals who can think on their feet and whose actions demonstrate care and concern for others. It's an elite group. Currently, we accept approximately 15% of individuals who apply. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
