KNOM is currently recruiting volunteers to serve one-year terms beginning summer 2008.

KNOM has maintained a successful volunteer program since 1966. Since 1971, KNOM's signal has beamed into dozens of isolated Eskimo villages, thanks to fulltime volunteers. Volunteers have been critical to the station's success ever since. Each volunteer receives room and board, round trip air transportation, health insurance, a monthly cash stipend, and, of course, plenty of practical experience in professional radio broadcasting.

In 1991, KNOM began enlarging its permanent salaried staff in order to increase the mission's long-term stability, but volunteers remain on the front lines.

KNOM offers an outstanding Fellowship Program for qualified volunteers.  Successful candidates will be awarded $5,000 to cover past or future education expenses.

Volunteers work in a variety of positions. Some divide their time between deejaying over the air and producing feature interviews and documentary programs, or producing spots. Some serve as news reporters and producers. Overall, it is an excellent opportunity to learn the art of broadcasting.

All live together in a comfortable home near the studios.

From Nome, volunteers often fly to remote villages to cover traditional festivals and events.

This picture was taken by a KNOM volunteer at the village of Little Diomede. 179 hardy Inupiaq Eskimos live on this isolated island, just 3 miles from the Russian border across the windswept Bering Strait.

Prior broadcasting experience is not necessary. Successful applicants are hard working, self-motivated individuals who can think on their feet and whose actions demonstrate care and concern for others. It's an elite group. Currently, we accept approximately 15% of individuals who apply.
